Magi Viljanen is a Finnish visual artist, photographer, filmmaker and writer whose work grows from encounters with people, places and lived experience.
Working across documentary photography, installation, film and text, she often returns to the same people and places over many years. Her work moves between the personal and the documentary, exploring everyday life, cultural encounters, spirituality and change.

“Ram Ram is my life’s work, the story of a village whose life has become part of my own.”
RAM RAM is the result of more than thirty years of photographing life in the village of Ludia, in India’s Kutch region. Since 1990, I have gradually become part of the community itself. The villagers call me their white daughter.
I have known five generations, sharing their lives from childhood to old age, through celebrations, loss, everyday life and profound change.
